John Prensner honored with prestigious Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation award
John Prensner, M.D., Ph.D., has received a Clinical Investigator Award from the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation for his proposal:
“Therapeutic opportunities and mechanistic insights of protein-RNA dyssynchrony in medulloblastoma.”
The award supports outstanding early-career physician-scientists whose disease-oriented research has the potential to directly impact patients.
Prensner was recognized as a leading pediatric cancer researcher whose work is focused on understanding the biological underpinnings of high-risk medulloblastoma and developing new treatment options.
The award was given to 6 recipients in total, and designed to increase the number of physicians capable of translating their discoveries in the lab into viable therapeutics for cancer patients.

The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation was founded in 1946 by famed radio broadcaster Walter Winchell in honor of his good friend, sportswriter and journalist Damon Runyon. His death from cancer spurred Winchell to announce to listeners to send anything they could afford to help find a cure for this horrible disease. The result was a flood of donations and support from celebrities such as Bob Hope, Marlene Dietrich and Milton Berle. Winchell led fundraising efforts until his own death from cancer in 1972.
